On 24 February 2022, IPMMA in association with American Association of Indian Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAiPS) conducted a collaborative webinar on ‘Impact of Emerging Technologies on current Solid Dose Manufacturing’ which received a healthy response of 120+ participants from the pharma industry. Kaushik Desai, Advisor, IPMMA moderated the session and along with Harshit Shah, President IPMMA gave a hearty welcome to the speaker Dilip Parikh.
The guest speaker for this webinar was Dilip Parikh, President of DPharma Group Inc. In his 45 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry including major pharmaceutical, generic, and specialty pharmaceutical companies he has served at senior positions. In addition to being editor of a highly acclaimed book titled “Handbook of Pharmaceutical Granulation Technology” a third edition, he has also authored a book titled ” How to Optimize Fluid Bed Technology”.
Dilip Parikh shared his expert views on current technologies deployed in the field of Solid Dosage forms, USFDA classification of emerging technologies, challenges in product development and other factors that will impact solid dosage growth. He also briefly shared his views on Digitization with its pros and cons in the present industry scenario.
Elaborating upon current technologies deployed in the field of Solid Dosage forms, he spoke about direct compression, granulation technology encompassing dry granulation, high shear/fluid bed/ – granulation/drying/coating, pelletization and effervescent dosage forms. Controlled release formulation is one of the major formulation challenges followed by fixed-dose combination, drug stabilizers, continuous processing and so on. While in case of challenges in formulating oral solids, poorly soluble drugs topped the charts, followed by controlled release formulations, oxidative degradation, high drug load products and more.
Under solubility enhancement techniques he stated, physical modification, chemical modifications and few miscellaneous methods. Elaborating on Hot Melt Extrusion (HME) and its process he also threw light on few selected marketed products based on HME, solid dispersion by spray drying, nanosuspension/nanoparticles with their respective pros and cons.
Dilip Parikh then discussed on drivers for continuous manufacturing, high potency API and dosage forms market, gummy dosage forms and its market, containment technology, multi-layer tableting and PODRAS (Paradoxical Overdose Resistant Activating System) to avoid overdose.
Talking about digitalization paradigm in the pharma industry, he emphasized on the impact of automation, data acquisition, process control, artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing product development. He also briefly shared his views on new product technologies such as continuous manufacturing, hot-melt extrusion, 3D printing, electrospinning, gummy dosage forms, oral thin film, wireless electronic dosage forms, organ on the chip and more. The participants made webinar a great success with their active interaction through Q&A.
